Hanky Code

Back in the days when it was not "safe" for gay men to openly express their sexual interests, gay men developed a clandestine "secret" code/signal. This code/signal, using five to six different colored hankies, would tell other gay men what they were looking for sexually, without ever having to say anything in public. Over time, this code became known as the "hanky code," and grew to a ridiculous length — to the point that no normal human being can remember it all.

Traditionally, the hanky, or flag as they are often refer to as, worn in the left pocket implies the Top or Dominant role. While the hanky, or flag, worn in the right pocket implies the bottom or submissive role.

Below is an "Unofficial Hanky Code List" — unofficial, because there is no real official one. Always use caution with this code since there are several regional and worldwide differences in the code — it is always safer to ask than assume — but, this list should do as a general outline for almost everyone. Also keep in mind that it is now fashionable (especially by gangs) to wear colored hankies, and not be gay.

Colors, below, in bold type are hankies which are still in common use within the Leather BDSM bars and community. The remainder of this code has become pretty obsolete in the age of open communication and acceptance.
